Teaching is so much more than educating. It may sound corny and overused, but being a teacher is also about changing lives, and we have to make that for the better.
Hearing stories about students with not-so-good backgrounds or parents or family life is heartbreaking. You can’t just teach students then send them on their way. If a student needs help, that student becomes a child–your child. If a student comes in hungry, you’re not going to let him starve. If a student comes in without a coat or proper shoes in the winter, you’re not going to let her freeze. If a student comes in with bruises from someone at home, you’re not going to send him back.
You don’t have to play a mother/father role, but how could there not be something inside you telling to?
